Raise a glass in gold country: wine tasting in Murphys

Tucked into Calaveras County’s Sierra foothills, Murphys offers a fun escape for wine lovers—combining historic flair, a concentrated tasting-room stroll, and some of the region’s best Rhône, Italian, and Zinfandel varietals. Here’s a guide to a some of our favorites, along with a few places that are on our bucket list of wines to try.

Main Street Murphys

Main Street Murphys has over two dozen tasting rooms—all within easy walking distance. It’s a true “tasting-on-foot” experience: wander between pours, chat with winemakers, and soak in the town’s Gold Rush–era charm without worrying about driving.

  • Milliaire Winery, the town’s oldest, has been crafting distinctive Zinfandels since 1983. Its creekside patio is ideal for relaxing with live music and a glass.

  • Black Sheep Winery, the colorful “little yellow farmhouse,” serves both red and white Rhône varietals—think Cinsault, Shiraz, and even port-style pours.

  • Hovey Winery offers a shady wine garden and outdoor seating perfect for sampling award‑worthy blends and crisp whites in a historic setting.

  • Stevenot Winery, just off Main, has a welcoming vibe with live music Sundays and relaxed, reservation-free tastings.

  • Frog’s Tooth, hidden in a storefront on Main Street, is known for appointment‑only tastings—but worth it for a more intimate experience.

Scenic Vineyard Escapes
If you are up for a short drive, nearby vineyards offer wine tasting at the source.

  • Brice Station is a small, family-owned winery in the Sierra Nevada Foothill town of Murphys that produces red wine from its seven-acre vineyards, with a tasting room open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 6 pm.

  • Ironstone Vineyard offers tastings, tours, and food on its 11-acre grounds. Pair wine tasting with a show. The Ironstone Ampitheater is a local favorite for live music and events.

Tips for a Happy Wine-Day

  • Stroll, don’t drive if you don’t have a designated driver. Round out your day with dinner in Murphys. Restaurants like Alchemy and Firewood offer local wine with your meal.

  • Mix Main Street with hillside havens for a vine to glass experience that gives you a chance to see where all the magic happens. Start in town, then venture to Brice Station, Ironstone Vineyards, and the many other family-owned vineyards along the Highway 4 corridor.

  • Finish your day sampling your wine finds on the deck at Happy Lake Chalet and planning your next trip.
