Lake day essentials – how to prepare for a fun day by the water
There’s nothing quite like a day by the lake—cool water, warm sun, and time to truly unwind. Happy Lake Chalet has several lakes nearby, including two private lakes. Nearby White Pines Lake is big enough for paddling and kayaking, has picnic tables and areas for grilling, allows dogs, and is free to use. Lake Alpine is our favorite nearby lake if you are up to a longer drive—about 35 minutes. It is a classic alpine lake, as it were, with pristine water, beautiful vistas, and an abundance of wildlife. And, of course, we have our two private lakes at your fingertips. Those lakes are smaller, have a day-use fee, and are not dog-friendly, but are extremely convenient, especially if you have kids in tow or want access to other recreational amenities, such as pickleball, tennis, a playground, and pool. As you enjoy your time at Happy Lake Chalet’s nearby lakes, here are a few simple tips to make the most of your time on the shore:
1. Stake Your Claim Early
For the best turf, get to the lake early, even if that means sending an advance party to pitch a shade structure and lay some towels down. We like to find that sweet spot, close enough to the shore and amenities to keep an eye on the kiddos, with just enough shade to keep the ice in our cooler frozen.
2. Pack Smart but Light
Bring a beach towel, a good book, plenty of sunscreen, and your favorite reusable water bottle. A portable speaker and a wide-brimmed hat can take your comfort to the next level. Shade structures are a great pick for a larger crowd.
3. Dress for Comfort
Layers are your friend. Mornings can be crisp, but afternoons often heat up. Throw on a swimsuit under your clothes so you’re always ready for a dip.
4. Plan for Play
Whether you’re into paddleboarding, kayaking, or just skipping stones, a few simple toys or games go a long way. Many guests love to bring cards, a frisbee, or a small cooler for snacks.
5. Savor the Quiet Moments
The lake isn’t just for splashing—sunset by the water can be the most peaceful moment of your stay. Don’t forget to slow down and savor it. We’ve noticed the beaches start to clear out around 4 p.m., when there is still plenty of warmth and light. This is a good time to bring out some pre-dinner snacks and take a leisurely swim.
We hope your stay gives you the time and space to reconnect—with nature, with loved ones, and with yourself.
