Calaveras Big Trees, a destination for all four seasons

Calaveras Big Trees State Park has become one of our favorite places to picnic, hike, and forest bathe in all seasons. Like most visitors, we first explored the park in the heat of summer, choosing a short hike through the biggest trees. We soon found that winter is the real dream, especially after first snow, when the park is silent and pristine, offering first tracks to those intrepid enough to brave the cold.

Shoulder seasons are equally alluring, with wildflowers in spring and changing colors in fall. Tourism dips in the shoulder season, when it often feels we have the park all to ourselves.

We are lucky to be just down the road from this all-seasons park. If you follow our road to the end, you’ll find a back entrance to the park along with what looks to be an old logging road. As you crest the trail, look back for views of the valley, before dropping down into the campground and Visitor’s Center.

We recommend a ranger-led walk for your first trip to the park. These walks give you a chance to learn more about the region’s history and its flora and fauna. Docents along the trails are also happy to answer questions and chat about the area.
